Lionel 6-18006 T1 tether problem?

I have the same engine but I upgraded mine to TMCC. I replaced the tether with another that had 8 pins as the electronics is in the tender.
You might be able to solder the wire back in with a very small solder gun or change the entire tether with another tether.

Thank you TED!!!  I will try to resolder first.  And yes that is what I will do if doesn’t work, redo the four pin connector.  I was looking at something like this.  Any thoughts on this one?  Thanks again for your reply.

Hi, I would repair it for you not very expensive, if you try and solder it you might destroy the connector and with the way Lionell is now, I seriously doubt you could find the part!

I ended having to rewire mine with a 6 pin connector.  To keep the wires neat, at other's suggestion, I have a piece of shrink wrap tubing over the wires, but DO NOT actually shrink apply heat and shrink the tubing.  You want it to stay flexible.  I think I still have the whistle and bell backwards.  The idea of the extra wires was the ability to later add a cutoff switch for the smoke unit back in the tender.  I never got around to it but the capability is now there. 

This failure is pretty common with this engine.

Thank you GUYZ a for your replies.  This engine is a great runner and although I run it periodically I will attempt to resolder the wire on the existing tether.  If it doesn’t work I will go with the spicing new the there to it.  Thanks again for your expertise and experience with this engine.

Update on the tether.  I did manage to resolder it and happy to say it works.  I hope it lasts.  I did a reroute on the male side and hope this eliminates the stress on the wires.  Thanks again for your experience and expertise on this engine.

Thanks JHZ563,  that was a good read on your thread, and glad you have yours running good.  Thanks again for the advice.  I hope mine will last otherwise I am on the lookout for a plug replacement.  

Your possible replacement tether looks like a 4 pin one. That will work but I would use a 6 pin for extra capabilities. Like the idea of smoke shut off switch in the tender. I put a very small slide switch inside a Chessie T1 engine cab to shut the smoke off and on which is conventional only engine.

Thanks TED, mine came with the switch in the locomotive on the side for the smoke.  Yes it is the four pin type, thanks again.
