A friend asked me to look at his 6-38712 Wabash F-7 pair from about ten years ago. 6-38713 is the powered unit with the RailSounds, and this generation of locomotive has the RCMC and RailSounds Lite boards.

Everything works fine in conventional, including the sound. In command mode, everything works fine except I don't get any sound at all. It's like the RS board is waiting for the "start-up" command on the serial line.

These are the things I've tried:

1) AUX1-1 to turn the volume up, even though this would only affect the background sounds. (I don't get any sounds at all.)

2) Reprogrammed the engine number, which I understand also resets the electronics.

Note I'm doing the above with a TMCC set-up, not a Legacy handheld. Since I'm not getting any sound in command, that tells me that the RS board is at least seeing the serial line, otherwise the RS board would start-up in conventional.

Anything else I can try? Would reprogramming with a true Legacy System make a difference?

Thanks for looking!

That's an odd symptom, but I have seen it before.  I have an RS-Lite board in my junk box with the same issue, it just stayed silent, but works fine in conventional mode.  I'm keeping it around in case someone ever wants conventional sound.

I'd pop the RS-Lite board into a different Legacy locomotive to make sure the board is the problem.  If so, the board for that locomotive is still available at Lionel Parts.
