Lionel 622 Bearings

I have a 1949 version of the 622 which features ball bearings for the armature shaft/worm gear. Question is, are the ball bearings (1949) and thrush bearings(1950+) interchangeable? Can I convert over to thrush bearings and not hinder the performance of the switcher?

I would pose this question to Jeff at the Train Tender, I am almost certain he has both parts...The little bearing raceways will not fit...
