I have a CNW 2908 TMCC locomotive that has a chuff sound problem.  Whenever power is applied it immediately goes to a fast chuff; but runs well, whistle and bell work well, and smokes good.  The circuit board listed above is the original circuit board.  I have tried an upgrade board (R2LC-C08) and it works except for the smoke function.  I'm extremely versed on the differences between the various Lionel TMCC circuit boards but I'm looking for advice to resolve my problem.  I know that the original board has problems with the chuff, bell and whistle functions.  The R2LC-C08 circuit board confirmed that problems exist in the R2LC-Z80.  What do I need to do to resolve my problems??

FWIW, the R2LC-Z80 and the R2LC-C08 are exactly the same code.  Lionel, for some odd reason, just labels their replacement boards with the Z80 version.

If the smoke doesn't work, are you sure you programmed the engine type correctly?  Without the product number, I can't offer a concrete suggestion, but most diesels with smoke are AUX1/8 or for Odyssey, AUX1/78.  If the smoke still doesn't work, you'll need to provide an actual Lionel product number.

To see if it's the R2LC, take a known good R2LC-C08 (or R2LC-Z80, R2LC-08), program it correctly, and see if that solves the problem.

What is the Lionel stock number (6-xxxxx) for the locomotive?

gunrunnerjohn,

I sincerely appreciate your help in resolving the sound problem with the CNW 2908.  I can share this information with you and Tracker John.  When I started troubleshooting there was NO sound whatsoever.  The locomotive only responded to mobility commands.  However, it did smoke properly.  I discovered a bad sound power supply board (691-PCB1-04D) located in the tender.  After the board was replaced the sound returned.  However, I got a fast chugging sound with an underlying stuter pulsating sound.  It responded to motion commands but would not respond to any TMCC sound commands including bell or whistle.  When I replaced the locomotive R2LC-C Z80 with a R2LC-08 circuit board without reprogramming, I got a regulated chuff sound coordinated with locomotive speed but it still would not respond to any sound commands plus LOSS OF SMOKE function.  If I program the locomotive in accordance with Lionel procedures (Aux1/code 34) it immediately returns to rapid unregulated chuff WITH SMOKE function.  I have tried other Lionel program codes Aux1/0 and Aux1/4, other than Aux1/34 without any luck.

I guess the only thing left to do is find another appropriate steam sound board or a generic steam sound board and exchange the chip set if the present chip set (RS27S012 and ATLAN F) is good.  Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a clue with those symptoms.  My approach in these cases is to test all the boards on my test set individually first and then move on to the locomotive.

I can tell you one thing from the pictures.  You have no speed control and a standard DCDR motor driver.  That being the case, I can say that the type code I'd use for this steamer would be AUX1/4, not AUX1/34.  That's the default for a steam with smoke, and it's the one I use in the absence of Odyssey.

Thanks again John,

If you review my last comment on the crazy problem, I mentioned that I tried the Aux/4 default code as well as Aux/0 with no success.  I have followed your comments on quite a few locomotive and tender problems for years on the O gauge forum.  You have provided others with very useful troubleshooting information with great success.  I would love to have a test set like you have engineered and shown in your past postings.  However, I will endeavor to persevere.

I'm still trying to find the Lionel product code for this locomotive and tender.

If all else fails do not punt, find another alternative!

Bob
