I just picked up the Hallmark Lionel Toymaker Santa Express set. After digging out all the stuff the previous owners kids had stuff in the gondola I can't seem to get the elves to consistently run around. The problem appears to be with the gears underneath not meshing tight enough.

Tips on tweaking this a bit?? Thanks!!

If the gears aren't meshing because they are worn down, you can probably pick up a replacement set on the Lionel parts site. Have you tried adding a little lube to the worm gear ?

You could also probably find a slightly larger replacement drive/spur gear from a number of sources on the internet.

What is the part number of the gondola ?

As far as a tweak, if you can remove the sideframes, you might be able to fill the existing axle holes for the worm gear axle with epoxy and then drill new holes slightly closer to the drive/spur gear.

Progressing. Finally popped the center section off that the guys rotate around. Looks like the "film strip" was off on one end, corrected. The truck with the gears is really loose to the gondola. A slight wiggle and you can easily disengage the gears. Second, on the truck itself, the axle with the gear has a tremendous amount of play where the axle sits in the plastic pieces of the truck.

Best bet just replace the truck? I'm going to see if I can fit a small shim for now.Gondola axle
