Engine just stopped running shortly after purchase about 12 years ago. Has been relegated to the fireplace mantle ever since. Recently decided to take another shot at running and noticed as the speed control on the legacy is turned up, I can hear the motor turning but no movement forthcoming. Lights, whistle, bell, smoke and coupler all operate but it just  won't move. I hate to have this beautiful, expensive locomotive just sit.

Any information on known problems and or potential fixes would certainly be appreciated

Those models were famous for having the coupling between the motor and the drive shaft fail. You will have to remove the boiler assembly completely from the engine frame in order to repair/replace that coupling. Once you have the boiler assembly removed, you can try and power it up on a test stand, and see exactly where and what failed.
