Those models were famous for having the coupling between the motor and the drive shaft fail. You will have to remove the boiler assembly completely from the engine frame in order to repair/replace that coupling. Once you have the boiler assembly removed, you can try and power it up on a test stand, and see exactly where and what failed.

I once serviced my Lionel EM-1 by simply dropping the front drive train assembly, and did not have to remove the shell. All I did was tighten a set screw, and it corrected the problem. I did NOT have to replace the shaft.

Each of the guys above me gave you good information.  It is one or the other.  I would lean on the driveshaft as I have those on my workbench with that issue.  The good thing is the parts are available.

The same happened to mine a few years back. I replaced the shaft and it has run perfectly ever since. The part number is 6SP-8051-102. 

I was able to glue the drive shaft firmly together as it was spinning freely. Worked fine and still works well.

If you or someone you know can drill and pin the driveshaft that will forever cure this common problem with this otherwise spectacular locomotive.

Same here. Many miles since super glued. 

Its the coupling on the driveshaft. Simple fix! Put the loco back into revenue service, instead of collecting dust on the mantle!

The super glue method sounds like the permanent solution; my approach probably would have become loose again had I kept that engine!

Just drill a tiny hole through the coupling, into the shaft and install either a screw or a piece of spring steel, done.

The steel shaft broke? the section where the coupling slides onto? How in God's name did you break that? 

Think Marty is referring to the yoke that slides on the shaft; not the shaft itself; cross drilling or super strong CA works fine; Falcon70

No the u joint knuckles broke. I will get a picture
