Thinking of getting one of these for the grand kids. Anyone have any thoughts about durability, ease of use for children, play value, and noise level? Thanks.

I bought one of them for around a Christmas tree and was very disappointed with it. I understand it was a toy but mine never ran well and derailed often. Very cheap plastics as well. It wasn't even worth buying the batteries for it. I returned it and bought one from home depot slashed down to $25 the week of Christmas. It had more rolling stock and track with it. It played music and just seemed to be a much better quality product. Even not discounted I think these are only around $50 when they have them at Christmas. Personally I don't think any of these really justify paying the price for batteries to put in them. They run on C or D batteries which are pretty pricey but the home depot set was much nicer than the Lionel one. Just my personal opinion.
