SWEET,
What's fun about this locomotive is that you can pull a hodge-podge of CB&Q, NP, and GN (already manufactured) cars and be precisely accurate for a pre-Amtrak passenger train.
March 1970 to May 1971 produced some eye catching consists.
They look great! Heres a quick video of mine:

Absolutely! I will even run mine with my Metra bi-level cars. So many great options.
Surefire, Thanks for the video. My layout is down and I have my gear packed up so it may be a while before I get 'me running.
Just like the Conrail units, Those portholes need to be sealed up.
Do you like the shade of green?
Andrew
Q - Was that a slo-mo clip of your train going really fast or just a fan in the room blowing the smoke pretty good? :-)
Just kidding, they really are pretty. I'm getting the L&Ns next week from Mr Muffin

Even early Amtrak would count during the time cars needed to be repainted. Throwing in some Amtrak cars would be interesting. The BN E units were used for a while on commute ttains out of Chicago Union.

Not in pre-Metra configuration before HEP conversion:

Also, once the portholes went away I believe they became E9s. At that point the nose striping also became orange and white.
These units ran on the Metra until 1991-1993.

How was that accomplished by just removing any "portholes"?

21 BN E8's were rebuilt and upgraded to E9's by Morrison-Knudsen in 1973. Another 4 were rebuilt by M-K in 1978. They received 645EC engines and Detroit Diesel HEP units at the time of rebuild.
All were retired in1992.

Those are sharp!!! Enjoy!
Wow those look awesome! Cascade green looks great, reminds me of my BN SD40's #6314 and #6320. It looks like font for road number is about same size also. Cool.

Thanks Rusty! Great info.
The BN power unit has the Mars type light on the roof and the non-power has it on the front. Nice touch to have a different option like that. Excellent multitone horn too. No harmonica horn here. RICH
I thought that light on the top was a 4 yellow light beacon?
I did not know this model diesel was every run in the green BN paint. Very cool historically -- I liked the green BN period and use to model it on my old N scale layout - years ago. I was mad originally at the SF merger - lost two cool flags. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Thanks for the photos and video. I am sorely tempted. I don't remember them in their pre-METRA period, but I commuted behind (or in front of) them hundreds of times between 1988 and when they were replaced by the Winnebagoes. Here's a photo of 9901 in the METRA days...I took it off the internet, and don't know the photographer, date or location. Orange nose stripes and no portholes.
This is a beautiful color scheme, thanks for posting...Its a Wow!
