Blue Comet Pacifics (new Cab #).  What horn will it have?

Last York i saw a couple of guys selling the previous release of the Lionel L-2 for around $600. I had that on my list of items to keep an eye out for next week. Now here is the dilemma, do I try and get a great deal on the first run or do I pony up the probably 1800 to 2000 that the new set is gonna cost with all the new Legacy goodies?

Are you sure it is numbered 611?  I hope not, I already have one with that #.

Very much in line with other similar class locos with an MSRP of $1,299.99, and most of the big dealers sell them for $1170 or so.  If you're a careful shopper, some of these locos can be had for in the $1065-$1100 range when special sales are posted.

OTOH, the J is essentially a stream-lined "northern".  And at $1,300 it just goes to show how much of a bargain the Milwaukee Road S-3 locos were with their $995 MSRP.

I've never understood the mystique behind the J, as I think other locos have much more attention-grabbing detail and sounds -- although I'm sure Lionel will hit a grand slam with Legacy sounds on this one.  Don't get me wrong, it's a stunning loco for sure.  I just wouldn't race out to replace my current one (#606) only because of Legacy or whistle-steam.  Personal call for each of us though.  Then again, double-heading #606 with #611 or #612 could be tempting were it not for the fact #606 is not Legacy.

P.S.  the set price seems about right too, since MSRP for 4-car passenger sets is typically $639, with the big dealers selling them for $479 or so.  So expect the set price to be around $1650 on the street.  I wonder if dealers will offer the 4-cars as part of a set break-up?
