Thinking about pulling the trigger and purchasing one of these, but I have heard all about the gear/drive shaft issues that could possibly arise while running extensively. Can anyone link me to the replacement parts, just in case? Also, how likely is it that I will run into problems with this engine?

Likely the driveshaft will break but can be replaced with inexpensive metal RC car parts. As far as I know the brass replacement gears that Mike Reagan had made to replace the nylon gears are NLA. Best make sure that these upgrades have been done or adjust price accordingly.
Also its common for the cab apron to break. Check if thats still there.

Good Afternoon,
That's unfortunate, though I wonder if parts for the new(er) Vision Line Niagaras could be used as well...
Thanks for the advice.
Replacement gears, Lionel # 6208069900, or, NWSL # 2936-6 and # 2937-6. Replacement driveshaft, Stock Drive # A 5Z 8MD304. Earl G.
I think I still have one or two of the CC Niagara brass gears.
Good to know the gears are back in stock. Here is a comparison of driveshafts.
Left is the SDP one Earl suggested. I used that before switching to the all metal ones.
Center is the Lionel driveshaft, removed before it broke. Plastic spider is the weak point.
Right is made of two 4mm center hole U joints available on the auction sites. They have to have each end shortened by about a millimeter before they will fit. Held together with a 4mm dowel pin.

The other thing to consider about replacing is the deck plate to the tender. That is one of the things I didn't have done when mine was fixed because I didn't know about that problem. If I do want it fixed(one side is slightly broken), I ask Pat(Harmon Yards) to operate on it.
The deck plate is a poor design. It is unable to raise above horizontal and anything that causes the tender to raise up, grade transitions, uneven track, will stress it enough to break it. The Vision model just has a beefier version but still bad design. Best to just make one that pivots like MTH and 3rd Rail deck plates at the level of the cab floor.
