After the coupling issues with the milk cars and plug door reefers, I've been afraid to purchase new Lionel cars - getting mine used from a vendor in Georgia who can tell me if the car has the older premium trucks. I like the new stuff, and would like to get some of them, but I want them to work with existing rolling stock and locos.
Has Lionel redesigned the new Vietnamese couplers so they work with older equipment, or are they still problematic?

Yes they have but I don’t know when they will hit the market.
I just received two of the new PS-2 hoppers - a PRR and a Central Soya - and the couplers work without an issue. I managed to find older-style trucks with the hidden uncoupling tab and replaced the problematic trucks.
