So I decided on the mid 90's 6464 box cars and NYC caboose for the 785 to pull! I really like the different road names and color of these cars. As you can tell by my landscape video π, I've got most of the bugs worked out of the engine. Put a new smoke element in it and wick material. Smoking much better with Mega steam. Had to re solder a wire at the tender for the beautiful sos and whistle to work. The plastic coupler wasn't keeping the rear coupler closed. Looks like it the tab was never made correctly. I removed it and super glued the coupler closed for now. She's still breaking in, but running and corning much better. Again, by the looks of things, she was a shelf queen. But now she's destined to be a worker! Hope you enjoy! And thanks to all for the help and advice.

The 6464 cars look perfectly proportioned to the 785, Donnie. Nice consist.
Yes those scale sized Hudsons are "tight" and need to be run for a few hours to break in. But once they are they run really smoothly. They are built very much like the postwar models which are good runners. Mine came with a neat long stack motor too. I assume all of 784's did. It has several improvements over the 783. I just wish they painted them in real gunmetal like the prewar version.

I'm pulling a string of the diecast "semi Scale" cars Lionel made about 20** years ago with my B&A Magne-traction 784, a heavy load, no problem.
** Correction, time flies - these were made in 1991, 31 years ago, not 20 - LOL

Always liked the 785 with the spoked wheels. One fella at our club has one and runs it from time o time. Does it have 'steam chest' effects or is yours just 'leaking' smoke from inside the boiler?

Oh she's puffing from the steam chest on both sides sir. That's my first steamer that does that. I do enjoy that effect. I had to change the element as the original was so brittle it fell apart in my fingers. Put wick material in it , which it never had before. Tested with out the shell, and no leaks..from the top ! I overfilled it the first time and it leaked from the bottom briefly. But after it soaked up the steam fluid she stopped. It wasn't too bad. Learned just to put a few drops and she'll smoke for a good amount of time.
Gotta agree with Paul. The 6464 cars really look great behind the Hudson, Donnie! You probably need a few more!

Haha. There are a lot of cool road names. Maybe a Baltimore and Ohio. Also may keep my eye out on a 1-700e.

Yes, they were based on the prewar semi-scale cars, These were made in 1991, but finding them new in box (like I did) is not hard at York or on the 'bay
The "modern" catalog #'s are:
Lackawanna reefer 6-51301
C&O Stock: 6-51402
Pennsy Box: 6-51401
Shell tanker: 6-51300
B&O Hopper: 6-51501
The B&A caboose #6920, while semi scale, was made at a different time, but I bought it to run with this B&A 784 Hudson

Canβt help corrupting you with a 700E, but you may want to look into an 18056 - what Lionel called a 763E with a Vanderbilt tender (the more knowledgeable NYC folks hereabouts may chime in on whether or not NYC Hudsons ever had Vanderbilt tendersβ¦). Itβs from 1997 and has TMCC. A really sweet engine.

Thanks Paul. I really like to stick with conventional engines. It is a nice engine though. From what I understand Hudson's never used those tenders, but I think they look good. I'm not a rivet counter, I like what appeals to me. Continue to corrupt me guys. Just when I think, yeah I've got everything I like. Then you guys post these pics of stuff I didn't even know exists. A month ago I didn't even know Lionel made a scale hudson that was obtainable and affordable and stayed true to the pre and post war roots. Glad I discovered them! Thanks guys.
