Since the last time I posted, I have opened up the Lionel L1 I had been saving for Christmas. I luckily escaped the gearbox problem that has seemingly plagued many units but even with my luck my engine still had issues immediately out of the box. The left marker light does not consistently stay on. Always when first powering up my #1343, the left marker light is off, from there, it is seemingly up to chance whether it decides to flicker before finally lighting up. The model itself is not missing any details (I had also heard of people receiving trains with missing builder's plates and such), and other than the inconsistent marker light, it looks and functions great.

If any of you have any possible guesses as to my problem and its fix, please let me know.

I’m with John, …I want to say it’s two wires from the board all the way to the smoke box area where it’s dog legged to 4 wires,….2 for each LED ( obviously ) ……I never paid no never mind, but might be able to access that joint through the smoke box door ….if it opens….I can’t remember….but if one is staying lit, it’s more than likely a joint issue …..I’ve seen this before, on other models,….

I have also had a fair share of bad Solder joints. Take a look as well
