Well, here's a good one- After only an hour of total running time on my 2 week old Lionel LionChief Plus 2.0, Genesis #40, 2234070, I discovered to my horror that the pickup rollers had huge GROOVES in them- as if I had been running them for HUNDREDS of hours???? I then discovered I could hardly rotate the rollers by hand!
Of course THAT was the reason for this kind of wear. I'm welcome to any guesses as to the CAUSE of the rollers seizing up like that. To be honest, I don't recall if I even TRIED to move the rollers when I first got the engine. I DID the customary oiling on the axles. I mean who even CHECKS that? One unique point about these rollers- they are the ONLY rollers I have ever seen that have black plastic "rims" on them. Are they just copper clad plastic rollers? Who knows?
Now, let me say that the track voltage is 18.1 volts, and the consist was only 3 vintage Amtrak passenger cars. The track is nice and clean, and I do keep after it. I've examined all my other rollers on other engines (all metal, by the way), and they are just fine, with not even a HINT of a groove. The engine still runs OK, but I did put a call into Lionel about possibly getting a new pair of what they call "collector w/double rollers", but I'm waiting for an answer. I've contacted the dealer, and they're working with me about a refund or store credit, but advised against an exchange, because the same phenomenon could happen again.
Anyone else have the same problem? For clarification, here's the engine, which I believe came out in May of 2022:
Thank You,
Jim
