The direction manual was one of the worst ever written. There were

features in the manual that were not in the product. The sign was powered

from a battery in the sign that required charging. The display was clear

and bright but was a slide show. The display could be bought for about $30.

Since you own it and have experience with it, hopefully you can assist me in getting the most out of it.

1.) As mentioned, there's no technical documentation available in Lionel's archives for this billboard flatcar and while the sd card that comes with it (when opened) reads "Appotech Photo frame," Windows 7 doesn't see and recognize it as a storage or other type device even though drivers on card were installed. I have to insert the SD card which came with the billboard directly into my computer for to see it, recognize it, and read the files on it. Is that normal or does it mean the billboard itself is not a compatible device with Windows 7?

2.) Also, while it comes with a 128MB SD/MM card included, what's the maximum size card the software in the billboard can read and use - 8 GB (more?  less?) and what type/speed sd card does it use?

3.) The manual states it can display MJP (MotionJPG) formatted videos and includes a utility to convert other video formats to MJP formatted files and since I'd like to play video on it, what's the maximum size, length video file that can be read and played and what size sd card do I need to play video? Also is there a maximum number of video clips that can be recognized and played and what size card is needed to play them?

Looking forward to more information, guidance, tips, suggestions, etc. from you, Larry, or anyone else with experience with this billboard flatcar.

Thanks.

I think you will really like this car. The TV Look has a magnet to hold it to the flatcar. Also, the picture is really cool and has a charger included. Its like a usb plug. I will be glad to send you pictures if you would like to see the car. Its a point of interest on my layout display.  VisionLine cars and engines are top of the line in Quality.

Yes, SandJam, NS is where I picked up mine too -- on Black Friday.

Thanks, Trainrails, for posting that clip. I had seen it and know the billboard can play video but it's a short clip and I wondering just how long a clip can be recorded and played. I'm aware the recorded length of video clips depends on both the software used to record it and the size of the SD card used AND that's the mystery I'm trying to solve. What's the maximum size sd card this billboard's software program can recognize and use?Unfortunately Lionel's owner's manual is woefully lacking as it makes no mention of what size card the billboard can use nor does it say much about the software used by the billboard. Unfortunately since the software is comparatively old (2008), various searches have been unable to find documentation for it online. Other unanswered questions are: 1.) can video be programmed to continuously loop when playing, 2.)can separate video clips be programmed to automatically play in succession or do the clips need to be edited together as one, 3.) what's the maximum size video clip the software can make? I don't want to invest in an SD card that's too big to be recognized/read by the billboard's software as SD cards can't be returned when opened and small capacity sd cards are virtually nonexistent in today's marketplace.

Hopefully someone who either currently owns or has owned this billboard flatcar will read this post and be able to provide answers, guidance, and support to my questions and concerns.

I use a 1GB card and it'll work. I've put full length movies of various kinds on there and let them run on the layout. The battery gives out first, so what I do is swap on LCD for another and it works just fine.

I would be nice for Lionel to make one that could run off AC power on the tracks at 12- 19 volts. Hint Hint Lionel!!  I'm sure it take very very little to run the device.

Btw, approximately how long does the battery last playing video? Also, you mention swapping the lcd for another, did you buy a spare billboard from Lionel?
Wonder too that since the billboard can be charged and powered thru a computer usb port, uncertain of how low that voltage is but possibly gunrunnerjohn or someone else electronically savy could devise a way to power it thru the billboard's usb port using current from the train's rails via added-on pickup rollers.
Oh also, did that 1 GB SD card have to be reformatted before using it and did any of the files from the original Lionel 128 mb card have to be transferred onto that 1 GB card? Thanks for your help.

I've never tried a computer USB port, but I don't see why not since that's the hookup. hmm why not get a computer power supply and daisy chain off it?? I'll let someone else work on that for never ending power supply.

I just have and elect cord w/ 110V outlet with the charger plugged in and cycle the LCD's.

As for additional LCD's I have more than two to do the job. I'll put them on building tops to give added display and entertainment. You can put any thing your hearts desire on there. I just put on cartoons for the kids entertainment. And of course there's all kinds of pictures.

I think if memory serves... 40 minutes of time on the display. But it's been a while. Experiment a little and see for yourself. Put and a movie or display of pictures and let it rip.

Again... I do wish Lionel would have an ADAPTIVE PLUG 'N PLAY ACCESSORY in 12Volt AC for this or another larger LCD display to place on layouts. There's so much you could do with this Accessory. It's truly a lot of fun!

How about it John, Mike or Howard?? And stick it in the new signature catalog??

Well, folks, through trial and error I've discerned the following about the LCD billboard in this set.

1.) While it comes with a partially loaded 128MB SD/mm card (111MB free of 120MB), the device itself is able to recognize and use SD/MM with a capacity up to and including 4GB provided they're FAT32 formatted, although naturally the larger the card, the longer it will take to access the files on it. IT CANNOT USE 8GG SD/MM CARDS!

2.) Photos are processed and played by an application named DPFMate350 which resides in the the billboard's internal memory.

3.) For video the program uses an app named Motion JPG. It contains a small MJP fomat file conversion tool needed to convert videos so they'll play on the billboard. That Motion JPG app is only loaded on the Lionel 128MB SD/MM card in a file named MJP Converter So if you plan to show video on this billboard, IT'S CRITICAL that you make a backup copy of the MJP Converter file and store it safely since the MJP format is proprietary to LG phones and should the file ever be erased or in anyway compromised or corrupted no download of it is available from Lionel's website or on the internet!

FWIW, when I first learned about Visionline and the fact they made this billboard car, combined with the fact at the time it was nothing more than an LCD picture frame, but more importantly, the cost of even used ones was rather high given the dated tech, I decided to build my own modern, double sided high resolution version. Sorry, looking back, my layout was a mess when I made this video with way too many projects at the same time.

The basic idea was to use modern off the shelf high resolution screens and a modern multi media player module, coupled with track power and super capacitors to ensure no dropouts.

2 each VSDISPLAY 12.6" NV126B5M-N41 12.6inch 1920X515 LCD Screen Work with 2 HD-MI Mini LCD Controller VS-RTD2556HM-V1

1 HDMI splitter so the media player can duplicate the image to 2 screens one for each side of the car.

1 Micca Speck G2 1080p Full-HD Digital Media Player for USB Drives and SD/SDHC Cards, Digital Signage, H.264/AVC MP4 MKV Videos MP3 Music JPG Photos, HDMI and AV Output, Auto Play and Resume

For power, I first regulate to 12V which is what the screens require (roughly 2A max each screen 12V DC) so I used an off the shelf module to take unregulated track AC power, rectify and regulate it.

1 each DC-DC Stabilizer, DROK 9V-36V to 12V Boost Buck Converter 5A 60W Waterproof Auto Step Up Down Voltage Regulator 12V Volt Transformer for Car Audio Solar Power System LCD Television LED Display Screen

I then feed that regulated 12V into a super capacitor bank rated for 16V peak (should only ever see 12V)

SaiDian 1 Pcs 16V1F/2F 16V 1.6F Farad Capacitor Module 2.7V 10F Super Capacitors,with Protection Board

And then last, I also needed a 5V regulator specifically to feed the multi media player. This again, takes the buffered and regulated from the super capacitors and powering the screens, to the regulated 5V required for the media player module

Waterproof Voltage Power AC 12V 24V to DC 5V Buck Voltage Regulator Waterproof Power Module for Car Waterproof Step Down Converter (3A)

My point is, I really would like to see a manufacturer come out with a newer version of the LCD billboard. LCDs have improved, media players have improved, as has tech like super capacitors and batteries. The original Visionline model was at the time, probably even then a tradeoff of not the latest tech but rather a price point that would physically fit on the car and work. You don't have to go to the maximum 12.6 inch diagonal size, but again, the original Lionel one could be improved upon. And the other thing, making it both sides for a true advertising billboard.

Wow, from 8-2014, when the Question was asked, concerning this VisionLine Billboard Car catalogued in the Lionel 2009 Signature catalog, it’s been a nice addition to anyones collection. It is probably a little out of date in todays blue tooth technology, but for what it’s worth, it’s a neat idea and the car works. I think the instructions manual is easy to read. I show this billboard car on my layout when folks come to visit and it’s a cool billboard. Lots of neat pictures. The list price $179 seemed fair, I have no idea what the value would be today. I feel it is collectible and I’m glad I have one. Here it is 11-2022 and the subject is still in the air. Wow. It may be that the USB port on the billboard is just for charging and doesn't connect to any onboard or inserted memory.
