This one is the Legacy Lionel New York Central F 12e cat no 6-11150. Initially on startup, the engine will run fine with the proper chuffing for a period of about 10-15 minutes. At that point, it will begin to skip one or two chuffs in the 4 chuff sequence . Sometimes you will get three chuffs one miss and then it might do two chuffs and two misses and the pattern is not consistent . The puffing smoke puffs for all chuffs including the ones that do not sound. The engine responds to all commands in Legacy . When this behavior starts , it seems like it is more sensitive on curves but does occur on other sections of the layout. It seemed to me also that the headlight would blink when this behavior began. Thinking that maybe this is some sort of diagnostic code. Its a single blink. Using Gargraves track and Ross turnouts with radius of 072 or larger.

I have tried resetting the engine using the procedure in the manual. I have wiped the IR sensors with a Q tip. They appear to line up correctly. also replaced the batteries in the Legacy Handheld.

I have run the engine in conventional mode and it will behave in a similar manner . Noticed that when running conventional with the DCS handheld in variable throttle, the whistle button seems to stop the sounds. I noticed the blinking headlight in the conventional mode when the erratic chuffing begins.

Running the engine the next day will generally give the same results. 10-15 minutes of proper operation and then the missing beats. I have a TMCC equipped 2-6-6-2 mallet from the first run and it operates properly on this layout. I have owned the ten wheeler since it was released several years ago and it always has been a fine performer up to this point.

I have had a recent derailment of a Milwaukee rd passenger car which seemed to have a stiff truck . There was a bit of sparking on this car before it turned over . Wonder if that might have caused a problem with the 10 wheeler. It was pulling the train. .

appreciate any thoughts anyone might have as to what the problem might be and how to correct the chuffing issue.

Buried down near the wheels there is a small microswitch with a blade actuator, the so-called Cherry Switch, that rides on an axle cam to generate the chuff.  This most likely needs a little tweak of the arm to make better contact.  I forget the exact location for that model, but it'll be near one of the drive wheel sets at the bottom.

John, lirr says the smoke still puffs when the cuffs are not there. Wouldn't that indicate the cherry switch is working? Could this be an infra red drawbar issue i.e. broken or rubbing wire.

Make sure you clean the track and locomotive pickup rollers as a first step in the process of elimination.

I've had dirty track that I didn't think was that dirty make locomotives do some very strange things.

Thanks for your help folks. The one think that I will mention is that this locomotive will chuff correctly when first run . It will generally do so for a ten to fifteen minute period before  the missing beats experience starts . So just wondering about the wire connection idea if it works at first but chuffs erratically after 10 or more minutes of operation.

Thanks for your help
