I recently purchased a MTH TIU REV-L for a layout I'm planning. I don't have any tech. knowledge. I do know the REV-L is the latest version. I would like to pair it with Lionel's Legacy Command Set. Like the TIU REV-L, I see different versions of the Legacy Command. Can anyone give me advice on which version I should look for or is there not much difference. I see a Legay #993 control. Is there a lot of difference between the Lionel # 990 and the #993? Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks

Very simple

990 is the one you want because it is the Legacy command base and the matching remote CAB2.

The 993 is an EXPANSION set, meaning it is just a remote CAB2 and a charging base. It again, is mostly just a spare or add on remote for an existing Legacy base.

The CAB-1L system of remote and blue base are Legacy Lite- not full blown Legacy. Key again, these are blue compared to the previous and much older grey CAB-1 series.

  • 637155 CAB1L Remote Controller
  • 637156 Base1L

Last, either CAB-1L remote, or the CAB2 from either a 990 set or 993 expansion can also work with the new and not yet released CAB3 base. CAB3 does not come with a remote. It expects you either use a tablet or phone with the also not yet released CAB3 app, or use a CAB-1L blue remote, or a CAB2 remote.

Again if you want to run trains today using TMCC/Legacy, ideally you want a 990 set, or get the lesser CAB-1L set http://www.lionel.com/products...command-set-6-37147/

If you only plan on purchasing current Lionel production, you don't need Legacy if you are willing to settle for basic command functions.  Just buy the Universal Remote for about 50 bucks and it will control all current Lionel locos using the LionChief/Bluetooth system in command mode with no command base.  Will not access some Legacy functions (e.g., whistle steam, train brake, etc.) but gets you command mode for speed, direction, whistle, horn, bell, electrocouplers.  Will work with all LionChief locos, LionChief +, LionChief + 2.0 and Legacy as well.  Won't work with older TMCC and Legacy command locos that don't say Bluetooth on the box.  You can also use the LionChief App and your smart device for current production locos. Accesses all Legacy functions on your phone/tablet.  Free.
