Great videos! Oh that whistle! What type of camera Doug? The clarity is fantastic!
While still generic , the crewtalk does sound as the the New York inflection was traded for some Virginia" twang".
Thanks Doug for posting this video, awesome sound and whistle. I can't wait to get mine
Alex
Nice videos and great smoke effects on the new J! Thanks for sharing!
I'm still unsure of the whistle and the chuff is not as deep as I would like it. The whistle is not bad but I don't think it sounds as good as the RS 5 version.
Guess I'll have to see and hear It in person to make my decision.

Rick, the camera is a Sony HD Handycam CX260 8.9 megapixels.
Yes I believe we have different voices on this loco.

WOW! Lionel modified the CrewTalk for these engines - not quite roadname specific, but much better than the now-overused one of previous engines. I must say the talking for the J is quite nice. And I think the whistle is close to being the same as the 2nd run of the Legacy Blue Comets.
Thanks! Great videos, Lionel did a good job on the new J.
Very nice Doug!!!
I really wish Lionel would personalize the crew talk on all these engines...
I added a 4th video, more train brake and sounds.
I'm new at this.

Nice videos. What a great looking, sounding and smoking loco. Have fun with it.
Patrick,
thanks for the tip on using my headphones.
i also put on my headphones and have decided Lionel has done a wonderful job on this J. Well, off to the LHS.

That first video had AB-SO-LUTE-LEE the worst crew talk conversation that I have ever heard!!! I honestly can't believe how stupid it was!
What was funny was that he said he was "Taking the green", then started off backwards!
With radio scanners so easily available, why in the world don't these companies listen to actual radio conversations in order to get a true idea of what crews say on the radio? It's such a simple thing to do!
Does your new J have the Variable Ashpan Glow feature? I know it was not listed in the catalog.
Nice. I still wish it had whistle steam.

or the cylinder steam effect like on the S-3. This J is for those who passed on the last one, if you have the last one I'm not seeing a big difference here.

That's the best way to put it. As expected the Legacy Railsounds are terrific... and it's enlightening to see Lionel has retired last year's over-used towercom/crewtalk voices. There may just be hope after all. However, I still maintain Lionel took the "good enough" approach here.
Without whistle steam OR the cylinder steam effects (i.e., either one would have put this loco in the "grand slam" category), Lionel failed to meet their own bar that they set with locomotives from 2011/2012. So now these models are coming up short when we compare them to current locos in our roster.
Yes... I realize there are some folks out there who don't want or use the extra steam effects. And we're all happy for ya, but please don't purport to be a voice of the market in a way that would potentially influence the importers to do away with terrific industry-leading features. If the S-3 had enhanced steam effects and a respectable amount of detail at an MSRP of $899, then the streamlined J and GS-x's (which don't have nearly the level of detail as non-streamlined steamers) should EASILY have incorporated those extra features at an MSRP of $1299.
Oh wait... I think I "get it" now... Lionel wants buyers to dollar-cost-average their purchases, so it's as if both locomotives MSRP at $1100 (i.e., $900+$1300 divided by 2). YES!!! That's it!!! That'll make the medicine go down a bit easier. Where can I buy one now?
BTW, Doug... Excellent videos...and many thanks for sharing!!!
David
Well I just talked to 3 dealers and the daylight wasn't produced in the numbers they thought .Some are not gonna even get there's .. There won't be any super discounted daylights ..
Very nice Doug. Impressive sound.
Maybe lower production numbers will allow for them to get a handle on QC issues, works for Mth who typically doesn't have stuff sitting on shelves 2 years after its produced.
Word on the street is Mike Reagan is/was in china, I'd like to be a fly on the wall at that meeting.
I've also noticed Ro's not stocking stuff like he used to, much of the stuff thats been out for a years is still listed as "ordered by request".
