I purchased the first issue N&W Y6b. It was by far the best sounding hooter whistle that Lionel has made. I ended up selling it because my Y6b, J, Y3, & A couldn't sinc and run together in a MU train. Then Legacy came along and I was hopeful that finally my N&W collection of steamers would finally come together.

The first engine out was the Mallet and after a long wait, I bought one because it had whistle smoke and it was reasonably priced. My hesitation to buy is the SOUND!!!!! The generic sound that Lionel has reverted BACK to. That same generic steam chip is in all of the big steamers. The second issue of the Y3s have generic sounds. What happened to the awesome hooters that the N&W and Pennsy Y3s had in the first issue? Lionel why are you ruining these great steamers by putting generic sounds in them?

So here I am looking at the possibility of buying another Y6b with Legacy and whistle smoke. My fear is what it's going to sound like. i won't order the engine unless I listen to the sounds. With today's technology Lionel needs to put a sound clip online of all of there engines. It can be a link in the features part of their website. Since this is a BTO engine it's a good possibility that I will pass because I can't spend my hard earned dollars on an unknown?

I think you have an excellent point, the overly "raspy" hooter offered in recent legacy mallets leaves more to be desired. Definitely not one of Lionels better efforts in the sound dept.

I would email your concerns directly to Lionel, they do read them. The whistle on the legacy blue comet was so horrible they offered to change the soundset under warranty.

Lionels "sound guy" has also chimed in here on the forum regarding the  recently delivered SP cab forward.

Sound clips of the BTO engines is a fantastic idea!

I too was more than a little disappointed in the whistle on the original Lionel N&W Y3, but, let me offer a little information. The freight whistle for N&W locos before about late 1941 was a higher pitched whistle (much like Lionel provided). The passenger whistle was at that time was what we now know as the famous "Hooter" whistle.

This all changed with the coming of the Class J and its "steamboat" whistle, which was applied to the passenger locos. At that time the freight locos acquired the "Hooter" whistle and the earlier freight (Y3) whistle was dropped.

I'm not making excuses for Lionel. I wish that I could get a RS5 "Hooter" for my Y3, but, knowing what I know, it makes it a bit easier to live with the Y3 whistle. But, I still don't like it.

It is too bad that Lionel has not offered a steam sound fix for the JLC Y6b and offered a proper "Hooter" chip for the RS5 Y3 loco.

You have precisely pinpointed why I am very cautious about buying the new Legacy Lionel locomotive reissues.  The Lionel JLC TMCC/RS5 version of the C&O H7 2-8-8-2, for instance, had unique and wonderful hooter whistle and chuff sounds, but the new Legacy C&O H7, using the same great tooling, merely duplicates the whistle and chuff sounds found in other Legacy locomotives.  I intended to buy the Legacy version until I heard the sounds.

In sum Legacy is a superb system, the most realistic I can imagine, but without unique and varied whistle, bell, and chuff sounds tailored accurately for each locomotive released, I cannot justify buying more engines.

Thank you for this post.  Sometimes I have felt that I was alone in feeling this way, and thus I didn't post on the Forum about it because I thought most people didn't care about it like I do.

I agree wholeheartedly.  Legacy engines are great and with the new chuff boards for the smoke, the sounds (chuff, whistle, steam) that each particular engine produces needs to replicate its original.  Now that's a win win for Lionel if and when they would do it.  Even if were just a download to the board on your particular engine.

While some people on this forum think that this "BTO" is a good thing, I'm not so sure.

Who is to say that a "BTO' number wasn't being done in some fashion already;-)
What is the minimum production number to turn a profit? Are "blow outs" figured in?

I made some inquiries, and I have it on good authority that the whistle sounds will be unique for the Y6b.  However, I don't think we will get a listen to the unique whistle until about the middle of 2015.

I do not know about the chuff rates, but assume it will be 2/4 selectable.

I believe the Towercom and Crewtalk announcements will be generic.

Please don't hold me to this info as absolute, but I personally am counting on it, and I therefore plan to place an order for the locomotive.

My layout is always open to OGR Forum visitors.  Just please give me notice if you find yourself coming to Raleigh.

I'm sure. I'm sure that it's risky. Obviously there's some perceived economic necessity to this program, but I don't like the "buy before you fly"deal at all.

There are no train stores around here to see anything anymore, and I've had too many situations of ordering something, being disappointed, and selling it at a BIG loss. Can't afford it. It's the new reality, though, I suppose.

Its a tough pill to swallow. I have the old JLC version and its a keeper.

The good news is I can finally find parts on the missing cab glass that has been unavailable for years!

Allot of people are throwing the dice on the sounds. The steam affects will be better but who knows what the whistle will sound like.

The big risk is; if you sell the one you have and then place an order, is there a chance it may not be made?

The rotary tipple accessory is a good example of this.

I agree but am keeping the original JLC version at least until the new one arrives.

I was not aware that Lionel EVER had "selectable" chuff rate. You get what it comes with, correct or not, but they SHOULD make the effort to provide the CORRECT chuff rate for an N&W Y6b model, i.e. starts in simple and changes to compound.

Jim,

I wonder what it will sound like, too! It'll be hard to beat the JLC Y6b hooter.  That whistle is arguably the best one ever produced by any manufacturer.

Hot Water, you are right and I'm wrong about the selectable chuff rate. I must have been hallucinating.

But the Legacy Y6b whistle will indeed be unique. Whether it's accurate or not, I cannot predict. I posted two videos of a real Y6b whistle on Vimeo some time back for reference:

https://vimeo.com/m/17774790

 https://vimeo.com/m/17774387

This whistle was on loan to the New Hope Valley RR.

I mentioned above that I think the whistle on the JLC version of the Y6b is the best Lionel has ever produced. However, I didn't say it was accurate; I just like the sound. I lowered my expectations for prototypical sounds more than a decade ago, though I wholeheartedly agree with you and others that Lionel should strive for that.

Ditto for simple and compound chuffing sounds.

I have always liked the look of these locos so this rendition is quite tempting. I am trying to figure out if it will work on my RR.

Does anyone know the measurement from the front of the first set of drivers to the rear of the second set of drivers on the older JLC version? Hopefully this will give me a close estimate of the new one. I have a reverse curve with a short distance between the reverse curves that limits most x-8-8-x locomotives. Thanks

Funny - I have a RS5 ex-N&W (re-lettered) tender that I run behind another loco,

and it has the hooter whistle - and I do not like N&W hooter whistles. I have tried to

get a RS5 chip for a large, non-hooter steamer to replace the N&W, but Lionel won't do

that on RS5, and a RS4 chip sounds fine, but the coil coupler no longer works and the

backup light stays on. So. The particular locomotive does not matter to me, as I

never use crew talk, etc.

I'm trying to rid myself of the hooter whistle, and some are desperately seeking it.

Stop the madness!

From listening to the videos it appears that the speaker/s are ONLY in the tender.

Steve

Two "baby fatboy" speakers in the tender, a speaker in the loco is reserved for VL stuff.

Having said that, I doubt you'll be disappointed in the sound from the two fatboys. This has been pretty much standard issue on scale steamers for several years now, as long as the tender has enough room.
