Lionel Legacy Software Utility 2.0

I am attempting to upgrade my Legacy Base & Cab2 to V1.54. It is currently at v1.52, the unit purchased December 2014. Upon installing the LSU v2.0 downloaded 6/01/2015, connecting the base to my PC using the Y cable and a Gigaware Serial to USB cable, the software finds the base on Comm 3. After clicking on the box to back up the database in the Base, I get a comm error,"Incorrect response from base". I changed the speed to low per the manual, no luck.

 

Figuring the software had a glitch, I attempted to find the LSU on Lionel's website to download again. Guess what? It is not to be found! All I get is a message "Going down the wrong road" with a light in a tunnel portal.

 

I have 2 questions. Mike Regan made a instructional video in 2012 on using the LSU. He referenced and implied you had to use a specific USB to serial adapter. Is that the case? The manual implies other manufacturers' cables should work. I use the Gigaware cable with no problems upgrading MTH TIUs and remotes, and loading sound files. Secondly, why would the LSU not be anywhere on the Lionel website currently? I am running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I look for components like that adapter I try to find one with good known generic boards in it. That makes it easy for Windows to find current drivers.

 

So, no, I don't think one kind is specifically needed as I have seen many types used.

 

But, driver issues for this RS version abound on a Google search.

 

In devices, right-click on the adapter and select properties. Then select update drivers and let windows attempt to look for an update.

First follow cjack's link to get the latest version of the LSU and I think there was also a Legacy release 1.6 after the 1.54 if you want the latest version. 

 

Now, as for the cables FWIW, although I certainly think they should all work regardless of brand, there may be something to having the proper adapter cable?

 

I had just the opposite problem as yours. I got the Lionel recommended USB to serial cable and it works fine with the LSU and my Legacy system (after Lionel fixed my base). But, I have not been able to get this same cable to work with my DCS system. Fortunately, I have a Rev L TIU and it works great using a USB cable. I thought my old and cluttered PC was the problem, but since it worked just fine with Legacy I'm not so sure about that now? 

 

The PC I tried all this with is running the same Win 7/64 as yours is.

Success! First, I downloaded the LSU and Legacy upgrades from Lionel using the link Cjack posted. Then per Moonman's suggestions, I downloaded the Gigaware drivers and reinstalled them. After that, Comm port 4 was assigned to the Gigaware adapter, and I was off and running! Backed up the Base, updated the Base and Cab2!
