Did you run it through tighter switches, also?

I have a 3rd Rail that is giving me a problem with the tighter Ross turnout.

Just curious - has anyone done a review comparing the JLC and legacy versions?

Obviously the Legacy has more bells and whistles (pun intended) but I would like to see how the JLC stacks up against the legacy in terms of detail and sound quality.

I owned the JLC Y6b and for detail it was impressive for 2003. I sold it knowing that someday the engine would be reissued in a common operating system so I could run it together with my other N&W steamers. Lionel TMCC and Odyssey engines do not run well with Legacy engines. You can do it but you have to dumb down the Legacy engine to run the together. So basically take away technology. That JLC version was and is a great engine. To get 2 Y6bs to run together I would buy 2 JLC OR 2 Legacy engines like I did.

It looks like the new Legacy steamer has the same detailing as the JLC version. I can't do a side by side test because I sold my first one. I remember seeing the cable/rope that leads to the whistle and thinking that's a cool extra. The Legacy version has it also. The roof of the cab is light green inside like the first one. One thing that I do remember about my JLC version was that the tires were a bear to change. (That's another thread.)

When the JLC was released the whistle was out of this world and nothing that we'd ever heard before. I said for years that it was by far Lionel's best. After owning the new Legacy Y6b, I'm glad I traded up. This HOOTER whistle, with whistle smoke, the correct simple/compound sounds make this engine truly amazing and an experience each time you run it.

Well, I for one am not parting with my JLC version...it has subtle differences from the newest version that I've come to appreciate, and if I want to double-head, I'll wait for a Legacy Class A! (Fingers crossed).

The JLC version represents the last Y6b manufactured, and now that I have 2171, I think it's awesome to have bookend models. I think the JLC version represents Lionel's push to solidify their place in 3rail scale model production. FWIW, when the JLC versions of locos came out, there was no way I could justify the expense, so I will concede a little wish fulfillment.

Some things I've noticed that differ on the two models:

  • Red paint on valves near the cab on JLC, not present on the Legacy mod
  • red paint on the forward brake lines on JLC, not present on the Legacy mod
  • (I suspect one can simply paint the valves and brake lines, but I'd rather keep it as delivered)
  • running gear on the JLC version is brighter (I prefer the Legacy version here)
  • "graphite" on the boiler front on 2171, JLC is black

Of course, the smoking whistle and generous smoke output on 2171, correct steam chuff and more robust sounds are a given.

At the end of the day, I like them both, and will have no problem draggin' coal with 2171 or 2200!

I have both versions.

The JLC version is stunning with a fabulous whistle. It only has two chuffs/rev.

The Legacy version is just as stunning with an incredible whistle with echo and four chuffs.

This locomotive is solidly in third place behind the Vision Big Boy and Challenger IMO.

Some will put this loco in first place. The whistle itself might be the best EVER !!!

The ONLY way I can see to improve it is to put a speaker in the loco.

If there is room and the sound amp can take two speakers in parallel, then it can be done, it would make a huge difference....I have thought of doing the same on the Legacy AC-12..Fantastic steam Whistle/Horn...

I remember when Lionel did the Warhorse J there was a write up about how they spent time making recordings from the 611.

Where did these recordings come from? Mr. Link? An actual hooter whistle mounted to an existing engine?

Yes, most likely. The NKP 765, for example, has had a number of different whistles installed for "contracted" whistle blow events, covering a day or two.
