When did Lionel introduce their Liondrive drive system, and what product lines is it used in. I have heard of "issues" with it, and am wondering if it is something I should "look out" for in my modern (as opposed to MPC era) diesel locos. Thanks.

Sometime is the mid 2000s. One way to find out is if you know an engines stock number you can search on its parts at lionelsupport.com. Find the motor and look at the picture to see if it has a gear or the ball drive.

THE SOUTHERN - Although you indicate you've heard of some 'issues' with the Lionel Liondrive system, there's a brief (approximately 5 minutes long) video that you might want to check out - if you haven't seen it already - on youtube.com in which Mike Reagan (formerly of Lionel) shows a couple of advantages of this drive system vis-a-vis diesel locos. Just call up youtube, then type in 'Repair modern Lionel locomotives, from Classic Toy Trains magazine' and it'll pop up.
