Came across an add for a toy, remote controlled, coaster-like set.  I had to look three times to be sure it was indeed made by Lionel. Wouldn't seem to go on many layouts, but, looks pretty cool for little kids.

Q:  Is Lionel indeed branching out to other types of toys?  Any reason for this, except the obvious?

Q:  Anyone try this out?  Does it work well enough to buy for a young one?

Couldn't find a more suitable forum, so I chose this one.  I would add a link, but don't know how to do it.

There have been a lot of negative comments on this forum about Megatracks but they are listed as a "Top Toy" on Amazon and they were also named a top toy at the New York Toy Fair.  Only time will tell if they are a Top toy with consumers.

Top Toy? I have a feeling that is just marketing, and has nothing to do with sales, or anything else.

The sets are already marked down to half price. I got a direct email offer from Lionel too.
The reviews on Amazon are fairly positive, but there aren't that many of them.

If you are thinking about buying one, I suggest reading the Amazon reviews.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in Amazon reviews.  Most reviews are negative on any site.

So where would one go to get an objective review?

Did you read the reviews on Mega Tracks? I did. Some of them were fairly positive.

When reading reviews, one also has to consider that is not uncommon for the folks with a vested interest in the product to plant positive reviews.  Any review has to be taken with a grain of salt.
