I have an old GP9 that was a gift when I was a child, and it is still in reasonably good shape.  However, one question I have always had about this locomotive relates to how to remove the shell for service (and possibly upgrades).  More specifically, this is the Erie Lackawanna MPC GP9 with the full stamped handrails that extend to the cab.  The handrails have a small, right angle piece that notches into the shell.  Thus, when you remove the shell you have to bend the handrails out of the way else you will scratch the shell.  However, if you bend the handrails out of the way they are looser when you reinstall the shell.  Any tips here as to what people do with this type of set-up?  I imagine this is why on other GP9s the stamped handrails end before the cab and the cab area uess a wire handrail.  Thanks in advance.
