Thinking about getting this engine, does this engine run well after lube and such? I remember one of the northerns (Rock Island?) that didn't run well. Also, how is the sound? Is it the typical sound set like in the B6, Hudson, T-1 ect? Also, what would be good to run with it, passenger or freight?

Matt, I have the locomotive and I am very pleased with it.
This was the third run (slightly different boiler shell) of the Northern and this one DID NOT have the motor issues the first two runs had. Mine is a fine runner at all speed ranges. It will hold a steady speed around my 068 loop without bogging down, even when pulling an eight car Lionel 15 inch aluminum passenger set.
I use the Lionel premium liquid smoke fluid and I get really strong smoke from the stack and cylinders. Very impressive.
It has the original Railsounds which sounds great.
It also has firebox glow and hand rails on the tender, which the original Rock Island did not have.
This is a nice running good looking conventional locomotive.
