One is TMCC and the other Legacy and operate on different frequencies.  Both can control conventional trains with their appropriate power master, but they are not interchangeable.  A CAB1-L remote must communicate with either a Legacy BASE1-L or a Legacy 990 Base or the New Base 3 due out this year.  It cannot communicate with a TMCC Base.

I assume that a Cab 1L will control a power-master the same.?

If it's a Legacy Power master- then yes.

Meanwhile I switched back to the CAB1 since I have 2.5 of those (one is flaky) and only one CAB1L.

I would take gunrunnerjon's advice: if you are buying PowerMasters, buy the Legacy ones for several reasons. With the Cab1 and original gray base, I can control the blue Legacy PowerMasters; they listen to the track signal. The original PowerMasters listen to the ~26MHz of the original Cab1s, as does the original Command Base.

Not a Luddite, I will buy the Base 3 when its more like the Base 3b after all of you get the bugs out of it. I won't even buy a first model year Toyota, and I have my heart set on the new Land Cruiser.

Yep, and to add to that, if you have an original PowerMaster, the ONLY way to use it with Legacy is to buy the extra kludge box, the Legacy PowerMaster Bridge.  If you add the bridge, it also precludes you having the CAB1 and TMCC command base in your configuration.  That is because the CAB1 and Legacy PowerMaster Bridge both transmit on 27mhz and step on each other's signals.

Confused rookie I am. I have two grey powermaster 180 for 180 brick. What I cannot find is Cab 1. I have one Cab 1 and it works fine, and 2nd Cab1 I bought on Ebay is dead to the world.
