I have a older convential Lionel O Gauge Polar Express 1225 set. Grandkids have loved this set for years. I am looking for a replacement headlight bulb, it is the small screw type bulb. Is there a brighter than OEM bulb available?

You can retrofit an LED in there, that will be MUCH brighter. I have an LED in mine, it's an upgrade to TMCC. The difference is amazing.
I’ll check into a LED. Good suggestion! Thank you
I've used a screw-in LED in this Scout loco. Works great!

Thanks Mitch and GRJ! So is there a place to buy the bulbs or LEDs?
I got 'em on eBay. Search "Marx Lionel LED Bulbs White" or sommat like that.

Thanks for the LED info used in the Scout. I think the Scout uses a larger screw in bulb than the 1225 P/E? My P/E uses a small screw in base bulb. Same base as a #47 crossing gate lamp.

Thanks Mitch, plenty of selections, many voltages; which voltage did you choose for the scout?

I used a 12 volt screw in base bulb, thusly:
One caveat: This LED bulb has a highly focused beam, So, if your installation calls for a mounting with the bulb at a side angle to the headlight lens, you may want to stick with an incandescent bulb or look for an LED drop in with a diffused beam.
12V LED replacement bulbs with both screw and bayonet bases may be had in white, red and green. Most of the ones I've seen have a focused beam, which makes them suitable for use in, for example, Lionel 153 block signals.
