If anyone plans to upgrade their F3’s and wants to install an AC Commander AND Railsounds 2.5 in the leading A unit, I found an easy way to use the factory battery compartment to hide the volume pot and RS/SS switch. I used a press-in 1-1/2” round chair/table leg cap from the local hardware store. It pressed into the 1-3/8” battery compartment perfectly and it’s easy to work with. I think the fit and finish looks pretty good.
As you can see, I didn’t modify the original chassis or shell in any way. I used the factory screw holes to complete the install. You can revert the loco back to it’s factory configuration without messing with the originality of this classic engine.
