The prewar B6 #8976 Bell ringing 0-6-0 that I own has only a spear point on the front automated coupler. The tender rear has a coupler with the lift latch. It is a beautiful engine, but missing one jewel light.

The engine is very dusty from years of display.  It is time to take a camel hair brush to clean it up to the condition it deserves.

Yes, like John says, I think they all had no barb on the front coupler.  I have not seen one with the barb.  This is so the engine could uncouple remotely from other cars on the layout.  Same for the rear coupler, I am used to see those with no hook at all.  You should be able to tell by looking at the underside of the rear coupler.  If there are no marks from a hook having been  installed at one time, then it would seem logical that there was no hook on that coupler.  I've only seen that on the switchers again.

It's worth mentioning that these would only really be needed on the switchers using the teldyne couplers, at least I think that would be the case.

I would tend to agree with you Dennis. I have them all (except the scale 701), but 78-ish years later, who knows how many times the couplers have been replaced. Many of mine, like this #228, came to me without front couplers, too. So, this one was definitely replaced.
