One of my recent projects has been bringing a prewar Lionel O-gauge 616 back to operation.  Unfortunately, both geared wheels have lost their grip on the axles.  If I simply turn the engine over to look at something, the wheels will generally fall right off the axle.  The track gauge prevents the wheels from moving laterally, so I am able to run it.  My dilemma is that I cannot pull the entire consist with the engine.

Should I try replacing only the wheels, or do I need to replace just the axle?

Hi Nick.   More than likely, you would be better off to replace the wheels that are causing you trouble. Since Lionel has reproduced the Flying Yankee, you may be able to get the wheels from them or MTH since they also have a Flying Yankee in the Lionel Corporation Catalog. Jeff Kane at The Train Tender is also a good source for prewar wheels. Best of luck to you.    P.S.    Happy Birthday to you also.
