Does anyone know if the shells can be readily changed with other current PS-1 Boxcars. If not, is there a difficult process. Much Appreciation!

I have swapped the shells before. Only trouble is the corner steps. They are secured by two molded plastic posts on chassis. They usually break when pulling off steps.
Usually the steps are painted ans so need to swap to match the scheme on the shell. If you are not swapping steps, its no problem.
Swapping steps is the issue.
So if you bresk a post, you just need to glue the steps on to plastic floor (chassis).
My experience is the same as Bob’s. Try to pick a matching color scheme for the donor car and it’s easy peasy. Otherwise, the steps are a paint job, or glue job, and/or cuss job. I love the original/high detail scale PS-1’s and the sound makes them even nicer.
I have done it. I just paint the steps black. I dont care if they dont match the car.
Thank you, everyone.
This is an old thread, but I figured since you all were talking about replacing shells on these cars, you could explain how to remove the shell without breaking anything. I have the four little screws out, but the ends are still tightly attached.
Ah, never mind, figured it out. For anyone else wondering, there are two deep screw holes slightly under the ends of the trucks. Six screws hold the shell on in total, four little side ones towards the center, two larger ones recessed in those holes under the trucks.
