I had recently received the Bethlehem Steel Genset, and was so impressed with the paint job, I immediately starting looking for Bethlehem Steel rolling stock. My attention then turned to the also recently released Lionel PS-5 gondolas.
I have to say, after careful examination, these are truly an exceptional piece of rolling stock! In my opinion, I have not seen a better detailed piece of rolling stock. The attention to detail, with added on brass parts creates a piece of rolling stock, that with the proper scenery around it would look like a real prototype. I'm going to include quite a few photos with this post to highlight most of the features. Remember, you should be able to "magnify" the photos to enlarge the details.
The ends of these cars fold down, for longer loads if desired. There are 3 removable top covers, with great added on metal roof walks, added on handrails, and in the middle section, even an opening hatch. The car ends have added detail. The brake end features a nice detail, with a real piece of chain, and a see through platform for the brakeman. The paint is very clean and crisp. If you look at the closeup photo of the car side and truck, you will see raised lettering on the truck - Barber etc. another very nice touch. Somehow I missed unloading from my phone, the full side view of the Bethlehem car, but the UP full side view is here. Some of the latest releases have printing on the 3 removable lids. If you mix them up, you can make it appear like a misprint, arranging them to show a double "M". There is nice underside added brake plumbing. Also, please note the wheels are NOT fast angle wheels. I really hate fast angle wheels! On scale rolling stock, I think, that the wheels should reflect the prototype as close as possible!
So take a look at my shaky photos, and see for yourself. Although a little pricey, I think the details tend toward justifying the price point. Remember, many dealers will give a discount off list price.
