I recently found a 6342 car to use with my 345 Culvert Unloader and 342 Culvert Loader PW accessories. The car came with plastic culverts. Were these originally made by Lionel? How were they supposed to work with the 345 Unloader since it uses a magnet to pick up the culverts?
Just curious. Am I missing something?

Nope. They were always metal.

These plastic culverts are the same length, same diameter, and same wall thickness as the metal culverts. They do not have a seam. If they were not made by Lionel, someone went to a lot of work to make them and they still do not work with the 345 culvert unloader.
Could they have been made for the 342 only or for a later model culvert accessory? KOOLJOCK1, I am not disagreeing with you. It just seems like a lot of work to make something that doesn't work with this accessory.

Could they have been made as a load for the flat car with the ramp ?
In my experience, they were always metal and the magnet picked them up. The idea that Dan had might be correct as they could be "dummy" ones to look good on the ramp.

The 6343 was the flatcar with the culvert unloader ramp on it, but it came with wood barrels on it rather than culverts.
