Lionel, if you are watching for reaction to your new catalog, I think it's great.

However, The dark blue pictured on the Missour Pacific Alco PA is WRONG.   The correct color would be a lighter blue like on the American Flyer Alco PA's.  Your best bet would be to look at the Key Model Imports website and take a look at their Missouri Pacific early E units.

I was there when they ran.  They were not a dark blue.

I think the blue for catologs is darker just for printing purposes.

BUT, did you see the paint scheme for the Mopac SD40?

I think there was only one SD40 that had a scheme like that out of hundreds of Mopac SD40s. And that was later in its life after a wreck down in Mexico I believe. Surely that can't be what they are producing.

Guys,

I spoke to Ryan Kunkle "Project manager of high end Locomotives" today via email about the Mopac engines. The things I talked to him about were:

1. Numbers on the Alco PA's 8018 & 8019. 8019 is wrong because it was a PA phase 3 and would not have had the arched rain gutter like Phase 1 &2. I suggested any number below 8018 maybe 8017. And he said he could fix that.

2. Paint scheme and color of blue on the SD-40. He said they had all of about an hour to come of with the art work and had no real images of the Mopac SD-40. I sent him pictures of the correct paint job (basically the same as there GP-35) and sent him some paint colors on this link.

and showed him this picture of an Atlas GP35 and one Lionel GP35 I bought

So maybe they could darken up there units. Personally I am glad that I only bought one of Lionel's GP-35's because it a orphan with all the others. Also Lionel needs to paint the fuel tank and side frames the same blue.

Ryan told me that he would be approving the colors and in his second response to me he said "Thanks for the links! I will definitely follow up on this and do my best to get colors as close to the real thing as possible". So I think we are in good shape.

I didn't buy the Lionel GP35's because their Jenks Blue was too light. MTH and Atlas got it right on their SD40-2's, U33's and GP35's.

I also didn't buy the Lionel MKT SD40-2's because their green was way too dark.

I would have been more tempted to buy these new PA's if they had done 21" cars in the Eagle scheme. We shall see I guess.

Palallin, where are you from? Nice uniform. I gather you do living history / reenactment events? I do too.

You gather correctly!

I agree, that's a big drawback.  If Lionel produced the cars, it would be one of the best looking trains they ever produced.

It is a very fun job to say the least and I get to do a bit of rail-fanning while traveling.

The correct color for Eagle blue is Cerulean Blue.It is a lighter blue than Jenks Blue.

I am really excited that Lionel is finally offering MOPAC LEGACY PA's. I knew they were in the works an as promised I am ordering three A-B-A sets (I know MOPAC had no PB's but no one has made MOPAC E7 or E8 B's yet.

NOW! WHEN WILL WE GET MATCHING 21" EAGLE PASSENGER CARS!

Hello, guys--

Did anyone ever get an answer to the question of the proper light blue color for the Missouri Eagle PA's?

A friend of mine from Missouri wants a Missouri Eagle train, presumably Lionel.

I had to advise him as follows:

o  Order the PA's because if he doesn't they are closer to being cancelled, and if that happens, all will think there is no market, and he will never have another opportunity.

o  Remember that the engines are just a down payment on the seven 21" passenger cars.  If painted in Eagle colors, they will be more than this years stainless cars.

o  As to the shade of blue, just plan on sending them off to a custom painter to mask and lighten the blue.

o  His 0-27 track will have to be upgraded ("O" 0-54 with 0-72 easements-- 5/8" offset-- at each end will work, and a couple of 0-72 switches in place of the easements will make an outside siding at 5" spacing or so without any need to cut rail sections.)

o  He will have to get a legacy controller to see all the bells and whistles.

Do as I might, each hurdle seemed only to whet his enthusiasm.  I think he sees this being so popular that a shovel-nosed E-3 is bound to appear out of the weeds.

o  After all this investment, the MoPac Eagle may be seen as a great market opportunity by all.  Someone (those who deal in brass engines, doubtless) will produce the iconic shovel-nosed E-3 with the iconic light blue.  Once I told him this, there was no holding him back...

...now about that paint?  Surely someone must know, or is no one talking until April 15th...

TIA,  Frank   (Just IMHO about the dynamics of the classic train market)
