I’m currently upgrading my Lionel 6-18043 Yellowbelly to modern standards with ERR cruse, fan smoke with a Super Chuffer, can motor, and all the rest. I also wanted to upgrade the speaker, as I heard, (see what I did there), it can vastly improve the sound quality.

I understand that 8 ohms is the optimal impedance for Railsounds boards, but what speaker wattage will work well? I want to use four 8 ohm speakers, one large 5W and a smaller 3W in the tender, with two small 3W units in the locomotive. (Wired in series- parallel for 8 ohms).

Will this load cause any issues with the Railsounds board or potentially blow up the amp? As I understand it the sound will be quieter if anything, but I wouldn’t want to damage the sound board.

Thanks for reading.

I’ve done a few upgrades using RS2.5 …..thanks to Pete & Lou’s guidance, all I used was two 4 ohm, 4 watt speakers in the tender,……the volume & clarity pounds the ground!!…..I don’t know if you’ll need speakers in the engine, plus, depending on which can motor you use, space will get to be a premium at some point…….add fan smoke, Cruise Commander, etc,….and you’ll be tight on space!…plus, I’d imagine a speaker in the engine would require some sort of enclosure to make it worth the while,…..even more space,……..doing twins in the tender in more than enough IMO,….
