BigJim stated the below on the catalog post. Is 1210 going to be as stat d with the multiple bearing crossheads?

"Note that the #1210 is shown with "multiple Bearing Crossheads. Only engines 1200 - 1209 had the multiple bearing crossheads. 1210 should have the alligator crossheads."

Also Dave, I have no idea where or what that is on the locomotive.

No. Classic TMCC and modern Legacy engines are absolutely limited to 2 digit addressing. We spent a good amount of time investigating options to make 4-digit addressing available retroactively, and it simply cannot be done. Not giving up there, we decided to put effort into a new Legacy radio concept that is going to be in the Class A and other future engines.

I know it's not the answer we all want, myself included. I have dozens of SP engines in my collection, and so wish I could use 4-digits on them.

Sometimes we have to live with the limitations of older technology and press forward with new development.

Two Base 3 questions.

  • We (The NJ Hi-Railers) tap the ground signal from the Legacy Base DB9 connector.  Will there be any way to do this for the Base 3?  We take that ground and run it around the layout to areas that a have a weak TMCC signal.
  • Can the Base3 connect to our own WiFi so that people using the CAB3 app can connect from anywhere in out quite large (250 x 100) trainroom.   We have an MTH TIU/WIU config where we use the ethernet port of the WIUs to connect to our house network.  Any chance there's a hidden ethenet port of the Base3?

IT's so much fun. Please consider this as a possibility with the CAB-3

How I did it - On Apple Silicone Mac Mini:

Liocnhief app - assigned mouse controls to Xbox controller using "Enjoyable" program.

I am excited about the Base3 and CAB3 app. I have a few questions...

1. Will the CAB3 app have an LCS tab?
2. Do my existing LCS devices have the capability of being assigned an address greater than four digits? If yes...
3. In the future could I use the Base3 and CAB3 to assign four digit address to LCS controlled blocks, accessories, etc?
4. I use the Legacy System Utility and the LCS WiFi Communication Monitor programs on my PC,  I use an iPad to control LCS devices and now I will use my Android phone. Will the redemption code you referenced in the video allow me to connect each of these devices or will I be forced to buy separate codes beyond the first device?

Great Questions here!  Especially the ground signal question.

I notice that the IRV2 was not in the catalogue and I saw a comment that stated "IRV2 was being discontinued"?  That would be a major shame.  Please confirm the commitment (or not) to the IRV2.

@Dave Olson - does you plan on having all locomotive features be accessable from the cab-2 moving forward (with the exception of the 4 digit address) If so, for how long? $500 for a cab3 is not cheap for those who have already invested in a cab-2 system. I'd prefer my cab-2 to not become obsolete.

Additionally, now the system's performance as a whole is dependent on the phone - before I upgraded to an iPhone12 recently, my iPhone6 was having performance and battery issues. I don't want to deal with that while running my trains. Would you be open to developing a "add-on" cab3 remote to compliment the system?

Will new Legacy engines still have a 9-digit address like the current system?

Would you be open to having a Q&A session specific to the cab3 in the near future? 

The Lionel A5 is a bit disappointing from a separately applied detail standpoint. I was hoping that Lionel acquired the MTH tooling for that model, but it remains to be seen at best. If not, it would be nice if some of the details from the B6sb could be adapted to this model so that it is more consistent with the MTH model and Lionel's own B6sb. Here are some images to help illustrate my point.

Will the Class As have Kadee mounts? I know they are going to have the Force Coupler, just wondering if that setup would be adaptable to a scale coupler.

  • Tap into the ground on the USB connection. Same result. Or even one of the PDI connectors. All the same ground.
  • Yes, Base3 has WPS. The Cab3 APP will also have a Wi-Fi configuration menu if you don't want to use WPS. There will be no ethernet port.

  1. Not right away, but I love the idea. The Base3 and Cab3 give us the ability to do so many cool things in the future.
  2. Nothing existing will get 4-digit addressing.
  3. Same as 2.
  4. This is still TBD. I would like to see the code apply to more than 1 device, but don't yet quote me on that.

  • That is still on my to-do list. I received the email from the call center, I just haven't had time to work on it.
  • Having more than 1 PDI port requires significant I/O from the main processor. The Base3 has a very capable processor to be able to control everything connected to it. It wouldn't really be feasible to make a multi-port unit separate sale.

In the future, I think/hope the Base3 and Cab3 app will provide the ability to address more engines, blocks, accessoires, etc. But I am confused if all of my current/existing LCS devices do not have the capability of being addressed with more than two digits how would I be able to capitalize on the increased processing power of the Base3 without replacing all of my LCS devices? I get that my current Legacy engines can't be addressed with 4 digits, but if that limitation extends to my current LCS devices I am struggling to see how the Base 3/Cab3 app will help those of us that are out of addresses.

Can the end user customize the Cab3 app to create breakout menus/tabs? For example if I want to assign only trains to the TR menu can I create a TRACK menu for all of my blocks? That would allow me an additional 99 two digit addresses. I am just trying to figure out how to gain access to more addresses. I love Legacy and my Cab2, to me the ceiling on the number of addresses is its only weakness (the obsolescence of its components not withstanding).

It was never a design goal to have it compatible, but since there appears to be interest we'll look into it.

It would need a SER2 and maybe a null modem. We'll know more after we test.

Thank you Dave for looking into this. I know many who continue to use their Cab1s even with a full Legacy 990 and it would save having to replace it with a Cab1L for essentially the same capability as far as running trains is concerned.
