I am thinking of bringing out my Lionel track cleaning car with the round scrubber sponge and try and use it to clean track. I have another cleaning car but I think I want some scrubbing action as well. Are the sponges still available? I'll have to look at my instructions to see how the sponge is attached.

The sponge is available from The Train Tender. There are 2 variations - one you glue on to the plate, and one that is self-adhesive.

I have the Lionel Postwar track cleaning car, but I don't believe it's a particularly good way to clean track.
I give Lionel credit for coming up with the idea, and it may clean track a little, but not much IMO. I think it's appearance and the noise it makes is such that it's quite good at pretending to clean track. LOL.
I'm interested in knowing what others think about this.

If you are referring to the Lionel 3927 cleaning car, here is a link you may want to look at.

Very interesting, thank you.
I put Scotchbrite on mine with a foam ring under it to push it down to track level. It actually does a pretty good job of cleaning the track. I also added a series diode to run it in command mode so it wouldn't burn up the motor at 18 volts.
