I just bought one from a forum member. There have been lots of threads on this engine with tons of pictures so I am not going to post them. I am going to let the uninitiated in on how terrific this engine is. The smoke effects are cool and I love being able to change whistle sounds. It essentially has 2x the whistles of any other Lionel engine plus horn sounds! The chuffing sounds are great. It really is an amazing engine. It is by far my favorite engine.

You are so right. I took a chance and got that engine. I think that locomotive is a huge bang for your buck.

Welcome to the club. A great looking and sounding locomotive. Many features for the price.
The Milwaukee Road Scale LEGACY 4-8-4 S-3 Northern #261 6-11229. There is also the 265 and 267. Very few left around.

Me too guys - but are any of you having trouble with the sounds dropping out?
I've added a 9v which seems to help but often it just goes silent while running and will take several tries to get the sounds going again???
Sam I have that problem with the S3 and the K4 across a switch. Either it is losing contact or a very brief short going across the switch and that causes the sound to quit until I restart the engines. None of my other legacy engines do that. If there is a problem the sounds cut right back in. It is the one thing I am disappointed with along with the smoke volume which although better is still not terrific.
Glad you're enjoying your S-3! It is a great locomotive, especially for the price. We love running ours and have a lot of fun switching the different whistles. I'm was glad to find one in the 261 road number too!

What kind of track are you using ?
I use a mix of gargraves and atlas
Switches are a mix too.
Atlas switches can be a problem. Take a look at this video our club member DTI-Craig put together.
davidbross,
Great engine. I really enjoy the smoking cylinders. Make sure you use the right amount of smoke fluid. It'll smoke you out of the room.
Have fun,
