I believe it's correct that the SensorCar will only function with Legacy version 1.6, and I think that for the SensorCar to work with TMCC engines (as opposed to Legacy engines without an IR receiver), you need version 1.61 on the CAB2. In any case, upgrading is easy and free.

There would be no need for the SensorCar if you don't have one or more SensorTracks. The purpose of the SensorCar is to add the ability to interact with SensorTracks to engines (either TMCC or early Legacy) that don't have an IR receiver.

The IR sensor car needs the sensor track.  Hence the name.  Of course this assumes you already have the LCS power supply and the Legacy system.  The WiFi module is optional to get iPad LCS functionality with the sensor track / car combination.

The car will add sensor features to earlier Legacy engines, any before around 2010, as well as TMCC engine features when using the record function of the sensor track.  Yes you will need to do the simple upgrade to get to 1.61 on the CAB2 and 1.6 on the base for these to operate correctly. 

Just FYI, Lionel has stated these will no longer be produced.  If you want one now is the time to get it.  They may produce a kit to add the sensor functionality to any car but that is a big maybe.

Thank you for the replies. I wanted to by 2 PS-1 sound car's, the dealer only had one and offered the REA car at a cheaper price. He really didn't know the difference except that the REA added extra functionality to the layout and earlier Legacy engines. That sounded like a good idea. Only when I read the directions did it become obvious I had no use for it.

Well, I hope the dealer refund or be interested in a trade. If anyone has a use for it, I'll sell it for $99 (what I paid) + shipping or trade for a PS-1 sound car.

Well it doesn't really help that the end flap advertises that it has sound, which it does not.  There has been a lot of confusion because of that.
