Lionel SD40T-2 Rio Grande # 5348

I recently purchased a Lionel # 5348 Rio Grande SD40T-2. It has three axel trucks but only the center axel is powered. This engine seems to run fine considering only one powered axel per truck. Is this design something new from Lionel since I have not seen a design like this before. Does anyone know what catalog this item was listed. Thank you.
