I am installing a Lionel smoke unit to an ERR cruise commander. I have included a picture of the unit and need to know which pin is the hot and attaches to the function connector on the ERR board. I am pretty sure that the middle pin is the ground to the engine.

Flip the smoke unit over and show the top side of the board. Some have a trace that connects the 2 outer pins of the 3 pin connector, others leave it separate so the fan motor power is separate.
You are correct, center pin is frame ground- however, both outer pins need power- one is for fan, one is for heater but some units connect them together.
This is why we might need to see the topside of that board (ignore the word "correct" it was relevant in that scenario when I posted this).

Thanks for getting back to me. I have included a photo of the top side of the board. It looks like both pins are tied together.

Right, so again, center pin is frame ground, and ideally power one or both outer pins from the smoke output of the ERR cruise commander.
The inner pin- the the one more towards the board would be my choice because that is a direct line to the heater, but honestly either one is perfectly fine. You can follow the middle pin and see it connects to the pads under the mounting screws- thus frame ground.
