I am going to purchase an older C&O Caboose (6-17608)). I think this comes with a smoke unit, but I am not sure. If it does, ,how do you remove or disable the smoke unit. I have read here that it can cause the plastic parts to melt. Any advise would be most appreciative.

There should be an off switch under the car. If not, you need to open it and disconnect it.
If you run command with 18V on the tracks, most of the older smoking cabooses will indeed get way too hot and likely melt the side or roof of the caboose! Most have a switch, but as Patrick says, no switch requires disassembly to disconnect the smoke unit.
The unit does have an on off switch. Unfortunately the switch also controls the blinking rear marker light. I simply removed the smoke unit so I could still have the red blinking light.
