I like smoking locomotives and smoking accessories. Whatever power is the smoke on the hobo shack and the tower that has the two guys on it is anemic at best. Is there a way to give the smoke more oomph? And if not is there a way to put a more powerful smoke unit in these wonderful accessories?

There sure is. It’s a simple procedure to install an MTH PS-1 smoke unit available from their Parts department. An easy two wire hookup to the on/off switch and you’re in business. Smokes like the dickens!

Thank you, Ron. Do you have a part number for that smoke unit?
POTRZBE,
The part number is AA0000011, PS1 Smoke Unit. It is listed under Upgrade Kits. The price is $50.00, so it depends on whether or not you want to make the expenditure for the upgrade. It has to stand posts for easy mounting to the base. After removing the original unit, I tweeked the mounting position for the most clearance to the roof and mounted a piece of aluminum’ foil over the smoke outlet to distribute the smoke more evenly throughout the depot for a more realistic output. I put electrical tape over the circuit board to prevent any shorts from the foil, so you may have to do some adjusting to make it to your liking. I also removed the screws holding the building to the base so that I can lift the top off to add smoke fluid. I glued the chimney on so that I wouldn’t lose it again. I’m really pleased with the now realistic building on fire.

Thanks so much, Ron. This looks like something I can do. Would the product and procedure be about the same for the burning switch tower with the 2 guys in it?
POTRZBE,
I don’t have the burning switch tower. If there is enough room inside of the building, I assume that the procedure to install one would be similar.
By the way, I just completed installation of two MTH smoke units under the smokestacks of my Menards power and light building. It was quite a project building a housing for the smoke units and a platform for the smokestacks. As you can probably tell, I like smoking accessories too. I am quite pleased with the results on that building also.

My first inclination was to say “be careful what you wish for” but after just running my Kline diner and the coffee scented smoke pouring out, I see why you want to increase the volume of smoke from the hobo shack!
Just wondering if the MTH smoke unit can be regulated to put out more or less smoke, in case “on’ is just too much?

Controlling the voltage.
Its now $65 Talk about inflation. 30% But this item is not tracked by those who track inflation I suppose.
What AC voltage is this happy at? What will it burn out at?
Thanks
i just found the same unit (PN) in the upgrade list and it is still $50, but when I just search the PN on the home page of MTH it was $65, so I'm not sure if its the same unit or has some extra features.
If the part number is the same, I would assume that it is the same item with identical features. Can’t imagine why it comes up with different prices depending on what method is used to find the smoke unit. I ordered two different times from the upgrade list, once for the Hobo Depot and again for the Power and Light building and the price was the same. I operate mine around 5 volts or it smokes me out of the basement. I’m not worried about it burning out anytime soon, even at higher voltages. The two smoke units in my Veranda PS-1 engine have been smoking fine for many years.

Thanks Ron
I will run it at 6v which is an accessory terminal on my kw.
So this does have a fan and it runs at 5-6 v?
I ask because I have a unit that smoke good at 6 but fan needs more voltage. It a 3 pin.
this one look to be a two pin.
Bob
TrainCzar, it runs just fine at 5-6 volts and can go as high as 18, but you wouldn’t survive the smoke long at high voltage. I don’t know how the smoke will show up on video, but I’ve attached one of both the Hobo Depot and the Power and Light building. Note that I originally had both chimneys on the Power and Light building smoking with individual smoke units. However, I removed one chimney and disconnected the smoke unit because it was just too much smoke and very difficult to synchronize both units to produce the same volume and density because it varied according to the amount of smoke fluid in each unit.
I see that the video’s didn’t attach. I’ll try again.

Best burning and smoking building that I can recall seeing Ron .
What voltage is the smokestack running at ?
The smokestack is running at 6 volts. TrainCzar was going to use 5-6 volts so I thought I’d set the voltage at 6 volts to show what it looks like. I can go all the way up to 18 volts, so you can imagine how much it smokes then!

Thanks for the videos Ron
looks great. I’ll pick up a unit to add to my burning house
