The preview of this model showed it painted billious green - sort of a Southern Crescenf green with something making it worse. I think it’s based on a very old issue of RMC which showed an 0-8-0 painted as a T&P in this color. It’s marked for the sole running survivor on the Texas State RR which is a much earlier engine. It should of course be painted “Light Russian” (GN gray green works) and I told Lionel that, last year, but.... As well should be numbered in the 400s with those compound cylinders then there is the coal tender which should be oil. Those are just the obvious things that would make it so much more a model than a $700 toy train. 997CCBF4-D019-45FC-B567-CB0AC123B8AA

How do we know the exact shade of green?  I agree this shade is not all that appealing, but it seems to match color photographs from the steam era.  Russia iron came in many shades, but by the 1930s railroads were using paint.

Olive green, yes, mint green, not so much. The mint green is probably more appropriate for automobiles of the era.

Assuming they did their homework regarding the restoration:

I agree Light Russian could fade. It could be like arguing the exact shade of olive drab on WW-2 USAAF planes... and color photo qualities change over time. Has anyone ever seen a real color photo of a T&P even remotely with this color? Speak now.... please!

If you look at the thread related to he new Legacy ten wheelers, Lionel has admitted the T&P is wrong and will issue you a refund. They will not provide replacement shells nor repainting. So, your options are a refund, paint it at your expense, or build a consist for the Mint Chocolate Chip Express.

I really wish that two things would happen. 1. They get the colors correct on everything they build/make(yeah, I know that is asking a lot).

2. Actually be more open to talking to customers instead of most of what people seem to get, one off replies.

My experiences with talking to anyone at Lionel has been more than just a one off, but my questions haven't been in regards to products that they've closed the door on(my Challenger email was several to ask about sending back and then getting assistance to get it moving). Other questions I've asked have just been railroad questions not directly related to products.

Maybe things will slowly move to change to better things, but whenever anyone says something like that, it always seems to go off the rail further than it already was. Just have to say "ugh" more often I guess.

Griff,

Although the only green engines that I like are PRR Brunswick Green your T&P engine does look good especially when looking at the Railpictures photo that RickO posted. As far as the coal tender and compound cylinders go didn’t you notice them in the catalog? I can only assume there can only be small changes made to the molds that are not permanent. Otherwise you can always wait for a brass engine to comes out with the correct details but then you will be paying more than $700. Hope you warm up to the engine enjoy the Legacy sounds and steam whistle.

I saw and recognized those shortcomings and more when I ordered one - I was just highlighting the obvious easy ways they could have made it more authentic simply with more correct paint and numbering. I had “hoped” my communication with Lionel might have at least fixed the paint. Ok so I believe in the Easter bunny.

Very few T&P steam  engines have ever been released by the mainstream suppliers and all have been simple repainted generic engines. In three rail, to my knowledge, the sole T&P steam engine in brass is the 600 class 2-10-4 by Scott Mann. In 2 rail there are Scott’s and the much older LMB. We beggars cannot be choosers. It’s much easier to model Pennsy, NYC, ATSF, SP etc.
