I have a Lionel tmcc f3 Lackawanna 6-24535 and I have a problem . The engine receives all commands and runs fine .. The smoke unit will not work unless I use the start up button and then it works fine . If I start it up any other way it will not work. All other commands work . What I have tried . I have tried a new power universal board I have tried a new r2lc board . I have tried a different smoke unit none of these have changed anything.

What do you mean start up button for TMCC? Normally a switch is used for on and off for conventional control but can keep smoke off even in command in conventional. Otherwise the Aux1 8 and 9 turn smoke on and off. Go back and reset the R2LC with the engine specific code in the instructions. G
This is an AC regulator equipped model, so the AC regulator controls the smoke. If the reset doesn't fix it, you may have to invest in a new regulator module.

Useing the start up on the legacy remote to start a tmcc or legacy engine . If I don't start it that way the smoke unit will not go on. But yea I will try a factory reset .. Them look at the other options thanks for your help both of you.

Ok tried a factory reset that didn't work then i looked at the Ac regular and noticed one of the black wires is off the one going to the ground is connected but I have no idea where the other goes . I opened up my legacy f3s and it's going to the smoke unit. Pictures attached any help would be greatly welcomed.

Need to see picture of wire not connected and smoke unit, Smoke switch. G
That's what's wierd the black wire from the smoke unit goes to the mother board and shows no missing wire ..The second picture shows the plug to the smoke unit and the black wire going to motherboard .I will take a picture of the smoke unit but it's the basic 6 ohm f3 unit that's in every tmcc f3 . If you look at the picture of the ac regular you can see the black wire cut off close we to the shrink wrap.
The pins on the AC regulator holding the wires up and going from the right to left as as follows.
Serial Data (pin 24 of R2LC)
Ground (frame)
Center Roller (track power)
Heater - (usually ground as well)
Heater + (connected to smoke resistor)
Lionel did not use all the wires. The grounds are common and not necessary. Plus this works, you just need to start it, correct? G
The second ground isn't needed, all the other wires are necessary.

Yup that's it .. It just won't work unless you use the start up bottom on a remote .. So I guess there's nothing else I could try?
No need to worry I fixed a lot of trains this one has major issues I am scrapping it. Not worth the time or money
