Lionel Toledo, Peoria, and Western 2-8-0 #16

Hi Tom,

I can't say I really know a whole lot about the TP&W railroad but it's what got me started in O scale. My friend had the Lionel Cross Country Set from 1988 and from then on it was Lionel for me. I recently purchased the  MTH GP38-2 diesel engines and wished they had provided a caboose. I had no idea that the railroad went back to the steam era. The TP&W is not a one of the railroads I run on my layout and only purchased the diesels for nostalgic reasons. I will consider the steam engine.

I see it has a Belpaire firebox. Do you suppose Lionel might simply letter the PRR model in this roadname and call it good? Or use their UP/SP model with a different tender? Either way, it would be lacking in "road specific" details...and we all know how that goes... 😳

I do not know the answers to your questions.  My guess is that Lionel will make this engine along with the BTO 2-8-0s that they cataloged in their 2021 Volume II catalog that just came out.  If enough engines get ordered, then I believe Lionel will develop the artwork for the TP&W version and get it approved by the dealer who asked for the custom run.  Hopefully the dealer can get as many as the road specific details put in as possible.  On the other hand, Lionel is probably not going to stray too far from their production run.

I have attached photos of TP&W engines 14 and 15.  I noticed that the front of these engines are different from each other and still different than what Lionel cataloged for their 2-8-0s.  Hopefully The TP&W version will have some road specific details but at this point it is anybody's guess.

Yea I aree with you.  It would have been nice if MTH would have produced the caboose.  In fact the MTH bay window cabooses are the closest to the TP&W prototypes. The TP&W caboose that was in the Lionel Cross Country set is often available on the secondary market.  If you cannot find one, I think I may have an extra one.  I have attached a photo of the shell that someone is selling on EBAY.

That would've been more of a reason for them to come out with the caboose to put with the engines. I already have the complete Cross Country set but thanks.
