Hello Everbody, I was hoping that someone might know the difference between Lionel Trainsounds and Railsounds other than the $50 difference in price? I am not sure if I should wait for the 2012 NYC Flyer or buy the cheaper 2011 Set. Thank you in advance and Happy Easter--- Jim

Thank you!
Its interesting in that the 2012 RTR catalog doesnt state whats different with the sets labeled Railsounds RTR. The 30180 Horseshoe Curve Freight in the 2012 Volume 1 catalog is also listed as having Railsounds RTR and the description states:
"Railsounds RTR sound system with upgraded sound quality featuring steam chuffing, steam whistle, bell and user activated crew dialogue scenarios.."
regarding the pricing, most of the large mail order places will discount the 2012 sets, so the diference in pricing wont be all that much.
Railsounds wins handsdown over Trainsounds.
I went with MTH because lionel was not clear on the difference
The older Trainsounds suffered from poor sound quality in addition to limited sounds. The version found in the starter set 0-8-0s is every bit as good as aftermarket RS4 in terms of volume and quality. You still give up simultaneous sounds. Blow the whistle and chuff is interrupted, etc.

Pete has the largest difference I've noticed, no simultaneous sounds.
i also have the polar express railsounds one 18754 it has a lot betterrounds and you can get a quilling effect on the whistle. the squeling brakes also sound way better than the train sounds.
I don't know what Lionel is putting in the Railsounds now, but the older "Conventional" RS had the dual board and was far superior to Signal Sounds or Train Sounds. It was not controlled by TMCC though. G
