Hi I just unpacked my GS4 runs smokes fine but the tender is stuck in conventional mode! I can blow the whistle on the transformer from the tender only. While the engine is only listening to legacy. I tried reseting it according to the manual but no luck. Any suggestions has anyone else had this problem?

If the tender comes on as soon as you apply power in a command control environment. That means the IR between the engine and tender is not working properly. The tender is not seeing the serial data to tell it to go into command control.
To test at home:
- If you use a low resolution camera on the engine's draw-bar and don't see the LED lit. Then there is an issue within the engine. But if it lit, then there is an issue with the tender's receiver.
Either you trace down the reason why the IR is not working with in the wiring in the loco/tender or get an RA# from Lionel to get it fixed.
Any recommendations? Been on hold with lionel for about a half hour. @Bruk
Make sure the drawbar has the optical devices lined up. If the engine's is bent up or the tender's bent down the tender won't see a signal. Try the simple stuff first.

Check my above post again^
And it goes back to lionel 🤣. This how my luck always works.
@Bruk is there a seal that voids the warranty if you take the shell off? I have a feeling its a loose plug for the IR sensor.

Don't know it there is a "seal", but they sure as the devil will know if you "took it apart".

No seal. They would only know if you told them. The set up is almost identical to the GS-1 i took a part.
On my GS5 had to bend the engine drawbar down to line the optical things up. The tender railsounds were cutting in and out when running. Just had to carefully bend the drawbar down a little.
WELL....TIME TO DIG UP AN OLD THREAD....B/C I NEED ASSISTANCE ON THE SAME LOCOMOTIVE.
SO, I ORDERED ONE OF THE LAST MODELS OF THIS LOCO IN EARLY JULY....BUT DIDN'T GET AROUND TO OPENING AND RUNNING IT UNTIL THIS PAST WEEKEND. FORTUNATELY, I SHOULD STILL BE COVERED UNDER THE FACTORY WARRANTY.
TO MY CHAGRIN, UPON POWERING IT UP....IT WOULD NOT RESPOND AT ALL AS LOCOMOTIVE ID #01. I RENUMBERED TO #49. SAME PROBLEM.
I DID A FACTORY RESET. NO CHANGE. IT RECOGNIZES IT'S LOCO ID, THE LIGHTS COME ON, THE STACK AND DYNAMO SMOKE TURN ON, ALL LIGHTS TURN ON. BUT IT WILL NOT MOVE IN LEGACY OPERATION. THE BELL AND WHISTLE/AIR HORN DO NOT WORK. CREW TALK DOES NOT WORK. BUTTONS 3 AND 6 GET NO RESPONSE.
INTERESTINGLY, IT WILL RUN IN TRANSFORMER MODE....BUT AGAIN, I HAVE NO WHISTLE OR BELL.
THE DRAWBAR'S DON'T SEEM TO LINE UP VERY WELL.
ALSO, THERE IS A BUZZING SOUND THAT GETS PRONOUNCED AS THE LOCO GETS CLOSE. EITHER THE MOTOR IS HUMMING....OR THE GEARS ARE MAKING A LOT OF NOISE. I THINK IT'S THE LATTER.
ANY THOUGHTS/SUGGESTIONS?
MUCH THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Too many symptoms, send it back to Lionel for warranty repair.
