A lucky break on a 11149 LM BB that for years would at random take off at full speed for a second or two then return to normal speed with cruise control on. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem I decided to cut all the zip ties off the wires inside the loco, just for the heck of it. This was last November so it's been a couple of months. It has run perfectly since then. No idea why it works but it does. Dumb luck. RICH

short?
I had the same issue with this exact Loco. Turned out to be a short in the smoke unit.
GGG’s response as to why,is as follows
“Yes, and especially if it was grounding to the housing of the smoke unit on the center rail side. Can be common, had it on a my N&W J. G”

A short for sure, but the random timing even on straights threw me off. What I should have done was inspect each wire trail and unzip the ties separately, but being very PO'ed at the time I took a different approach. Nick, did you find that for a fairly large loco there was actually very little space to reroute anything inside? No complaints though, I'll open it up one more time to recheck the wires now that calmer conditions prevail. RICH
Rich, Yes it’s pretty packed in there. Not as bad as some though. Mine had exactly the same random timing as you describe. However it was the smoke unit element heating up. When it got hot it would short out.
When you open it up again it might be worth “Reaganizing” the smoke unit. i.e. performing Mike Reagan’s smoke unit upgraded as he describes in his YouTube video. As it’s a early Legacy engine it’s simpler, you just need to replace the batting material with Lionel’s new style wick material.

Thanks Nick, will do. RICH
