Can this engine be converted to mth ps3? I belive the motor driver board and possibly the acreg board are bad. The odyssey motor driver board is unavailable. This engine with its outdated electronics would be at least for me better with ps3 under the hood. The cost of a cruise m board and new acreg board make converting this to ps3 worth doing. So can this be done?

I had an early Lionel TMCC EM-1. It had that terrible lurch when starting, it also would stop at different points on the layout. Very frustrating.  I also didn't like the 2 chuffs/revolution or poor smoke output. At the time it was the only TMCC engine I owned among dozens of MTH PS-2 engines. So it went back in the box for years. I decided to have it upgraded to PS-2 maybe 12 or more years ago. Still runs great, creeps at 2-3 SMPH, adjustable chuffs & smokes like a champ.

Since I love the B&O EM-1 so much, I purchased the Legacy version which became a favorite which I liked so much I bought a second! Well, I decided to sell the EM-1 PS-2 version on the forum but no one was interested. So I still run it occasionally since I invested so much into it.

The moral of the story, if you can upgrade to PS-3, I recommend it! MTH has a very nice sounding N&W sound set with the Hooter whistle. I think you'll be satisfied.

thanks guys. due to the cost of the parts and the main one being unavailable from lionel. this for me is the way to go. plus as stated ps3 has so much more features to offer than what was in this engine at the time.

I have been running my steamers lately since getting my new to me legacy lionmaster big boy with whistle steam. seem some of my old lionel engines are starting to have issues. mostlt due to poor parts design. plus with the older oddessy stuff thier is more boards inside that seem to fail like on this one.

I have another lionmaster legacy big boy and it too needs the motor driver board. that part lionel still has and it is getting fixed as I write this. this will be the second one thats gone bad on this engine. why they fail is beyond me.

I have about 60 engines now and about 30 are lionel and they seem to be the ones having issues all of a sudden. all my mth engines run bullet proof even the proto 2  5volt ones. wich I have only 3 the rest are ps3 or ps2 3 volt.

I sure am going to miss mth. time to get the engines I need to upgrade off the shelf and upgrade them while my tech still has the ps3 kits in stock. only time will tell about the dcs side of mth. only the folks at mth know whats going on there.

I certainly would not go with PS-3.

A Cruise Commander from Electric railroad is what goes in any of my conversions.

I'm suprised John didn't mention that. I thought this instance is what the cruise commander and chuff generator is made for?

I'm not sure what the cost difference is vs PS3, but I'd spend a few bucks to keep the excellent soundset in that LM class  A, versus a generic one from PS3. Of course, its a matter of personal taste.

Yes rick, I had thought about that. I still prefer ps3 overall though. Aside from the whistle and chuff sounds of the lionel sound set. This engine has sparce crew talk and very little smoke unit control. Plus the problem is the odyssey is going out. So its time to give it the upgrade. I find at least im my experience ps3 while not as nice sounding lionel stuff. It is more robust and reliable at least for me. Plus I love the way ps3 handles the individual volumes of the various sounds vrs. Lionels way.
